Epiphyte
Epiphyte is an adaptive reuse project on a 16-story building located in Kitchener, Canada. The brief allocated a redesign within the confines of two stories, while using one-half of the floor space. This project takes inspiration from the idea of epiphyte - a plant that grows on another plant but is not parasitic. When applied to the existing building, the addition improves both the quality and the quantity of the housing available. The new units are two levels, with the downstairs living space reclaiming the space previously used as a central hallway. The living room balcony mimics the concept of epiphyte, ‘growing’ outward, and orienting itself toward the sun. By perforating the existing facade, a private outdoor space is created, while allowing sunlight into the unit. The prospective tenants also play into this idea. The housing is perfect for young families, with children representing the epiphyte - the physical embodiment of the growth, which stemmed from the existing relationship between the parents.
