TD [2]
Blending itself into the urban fabric of Toronto’s financial district, particularly the existing TD buildings, TD [2] takes a satirical approach to Van Der Rohe’s International Style. Criticizing the typical 9-5 work culture, the rotating doors on the interior of the space represent the work done inside these adjacent buildings: life draining, often repetitive tasks. After quite literally pushing through the routine, a break is found through a central courtyard, which includes seating and a staircase leading to the upper floor. Viewers of the upper floor can watch those below them as they follow their menial routine, while they enjoy the open air, an escape from the ‘boxed in’ reality of their work environment.
